Media Update | Meeting with the Greek Ambassador

Officials discussed the possibility of transferring war-wounded patients to Greece for medical treatment.

The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), chaired by Dr. Ali Shaath, met today with H.E. Mr. Nikolaos Papageorgiou, Ambassador of Greece to the Arab Republic of Egypt, at the Committee’s headquarters in Cairo.

During the meeting, the Committee outlined the plans it has developed to enable the commencement of its operations in the Gaza Strip, including humanitarian response, restoration of essential services, and support for recovery efforts.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of transferring a number of war-wounded patients to Greece for medical treatment, as part of international efforts to support the healthcare sector in Gaza.

The meeting further addressed a range of sectoral priorities. Ms. Hanaa Tarazi, Commissioner for Social Protection, emphasized the importance of establishing a unified database to better coordinate and direct humanitarian assistance, alongside developing “cash-for-work” programs to help reduce unemployment rates.

In the telecommunications sector, Mr. Omar Shamali, Commissioner for Communications and Digital Services, stressed the importance of supporting IT graduates through targeted training and capacity-building programs to enhance their integration into the labor market.

Eng. Osama Al-Sa’dawi, Commissioner for Land and Housing, highlighted the challenges related to debris removal -estimated at over 60 million tons- as well as the risks posed by unexploded ordnance. He underscored the urgent need for technical support and specialized equipment, in addition to the immediate requirement for approximately 200,000 temporary housing units to improve current shelter conditions.

On the economic front, Eng. Aed Abu Ramadan, Commissioner for Economy, called for support to revive the local economy and create sustainable job opportunities, including through supporting startups and expanding remote work opportunities to connect local talent with international markets. He also highlighted the potential to benefit from Greek expertise in developing small ports, including the fishermen’s port, to enhance trade flows and improve supply chains, particularly in light of the restrictions imposed on Gaza and its crossings.

The meeting also explored opportunities for cooperation in the tourism and hospitality sectors, contributing to economic diversification and opening new avenues for employment.
